Topic Cluster Mapping: Pillar and Cluster Strategy from Site URL Structure

Topical authority is built through clusters, not individual articles. Every core topic gets a pillar page and 3-8 supporting cluster pages. The internal link architecture signals topical depth to search engines.

The Cluster Model

PILLAR PAGE
(broad topic, high competition, 2000+ words)
        |
        |--- CLUSTER PAGE 1 (subtopic A, 800-1500 words)
        |--- CLUSTER PAGE 2 (subtopic B, 800-1500 words)
        |--- CLUSTER PAGE 3 (subtopic C, 800-1500 words)
        |--- CLUSTER PAGE 4 (local variant or PAA deep-dive)
        |--- CLUSTER PAGE 5 (comparison or FAQ)

Every cluster page links back to the pillar. Every pillar links to all cluster pages. Cluster pages link to each other where contextually relevant.

Step 1: Identify Pillar Topics

A pillar topic qualifies when:

  • It is a broad category that contains 5+ subtopics
  • It has 5K+ monthly search volume (or is a core service regardless of volume)
  • The business wants to own this topic comprehensively

Pillar examples:

  • Service business: "Roof Repair" (pillar) → types, signs you need it, cost, how to choose, DIY vs pro, materials
  • B2B SaaS: "Email Marketing" (pillar) → campaigns, automation, segmentation, metrics, tools, deliverability
  • E-commerce: "Coffee Makers" (pillar) → drip, espresso, French press, pour-over, pod machines, reviews

Maximum 3-5 pillar topics per site at launch. Too many pillars = none get sufficient cluster depth.

Step 2: Map Cluster Pages Per Pillar

For each pillar, identify 5-8 cluster page opportunities:

| Cluster Type | What It Covers | Example | |-------------|---------------|---------| | Subtopic deep-dive | One specific aspect of the pillar | "How to Tell If Your Roof Needs Repair" | | How-to | Process or step-by-step | "How to Patch a Roof Temporarily" | | Comparison | Option A vs Option B | "Roof Repair vs Roof Replacement: Cost and When to Choose" | | FAQ/PAA | Question format, PAA targets | "How Much Does Roof Repair Cost in [City]?" | | Local variant | City or geo-modified | "Roof Repair in [City]: Local Contractors and Costs" | | Glossary/definition | Define key terms | "Types of Roofing Materials Explained" | | Case study | Specific result | "Before and After: Denver Hail Damage Roof Repair" |

Step 3: URL Structure Mapping

Map clusters to URL structure before writing:

/[pillar-topic]/ ← Pillar page
/[pillar-topic]/[subtopic-1]/ ← Cluster page (subfolder preferred)
/[pillar-topic]/[subtopic-2]/ ← Cluster page
/[pillar-topic]/[city]-[service]/ ← Local cluster variant
/[pillar-topic]/faq/ ← FAQ cluster

Alternative flat structure (if subfolder clusters aren't possible):

/roof-repair/ ← Pillar
/roof-repair-cost-denver/ ← Local cluster
/roof-repair-vs-replacement/ ← Comparison cluster
/signs-you-need-roof-repair/ ← Subtopic cluster

Subfolder structure signals topical relationship more explicitly. Use it when CMS allows.

Step 4: Internal Link Architecture

Pillar page internal links:

  • Links to every cluster page once (minimum) in natural context
  • Anchor text = target keyword of the cluster page (not "click here")
  • Add a "Related Resources" section at bottom listing all clusters

Cluster page internal links:

  • Link to pillar at least once in first 300 words
  • Link to 2-3 other cluster pages when contextually relevant
  • Anchor text = descriptive keyword phrase, not pillar page title

Link rule: Never orphan a cluster page. Every cluster page must have at least 2 internal links pointing TO it (from pillar + at least 1 other cluster).

Step 5: Content Gap Check

Before finalizing the cluster map, check each proposed cluster page:

  1. Does a competitor have this cluster? (If yes, it's validated)
  2. Does the cluster keyword have measurable PAA questions? (If yes, add FAQ section)
  3. Is there an adjacent local modifier that creates a separate local cluster? (If yes, add it)

Cluster Map Output Format

Deliver the cluster map as:

PILLAR: [Topic] | [Target Keyword] | [Target Word Count]
URL: /[pillar-slug]/

CLUSTERS:
1. [Cluster Title] | [Target Keyword] | [Word Count] | /[url]/
Links from: Pillar + Cluster 3
Links to: Pillar + Cluster 2

2. [Cluster Title] | [Target Keyword] | [Word Count] | /[url]/
Links from: Pillar + Cluster 1
Links to: Pillar + Cluster 4

[Continue for all clusters]

INTERNAL LINK DIAGRAM:
Pillar → Cluster 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Cluster 1 → Pillar, Cluster 3
Cluster 2 → Pillar, Cluster 1
[etc.]
