Content Rewrite: 4 Scope Levels from Light Edit to Full Overhaul
Not all rewrites are the same. Using overhaul-level effort on a page that needs a light edit wastes time. Using a light edit on a page that needs an overhaul wastes rankings. Define scope before writing anything.
Scope Decision Matrix
Run this triage before assigning a scope level:
| Condition | Points | |-----------|--------| | Page ranks 1-10 currently | -3 (don't touch what's working) | | Page ranks 11-30 | +1 | | Page ranks 30+ or unranked | +3 | | Word count under 400 | +2 | | Word count 400-1000 | +1 | | Word count 1000+ | 0 | | No CTA present | +1 | | E-E-A-T score below 5 | +2 | | Intent mismatch (page answers wrong question) | +4 | | Meta title/description missing or wrong | +1 | | Keyword changed (new target) | +3 | | Content over 2 years old | +1 |
Score interpretation:
- 0-2 points → Light scope
- 3-5 points → Moderate scope
- 6-9 points → Major scope
- 10+ points → Overhaul
Level 1: Light (30-60 minutes)
What changes:
- Meta title and meta description rewritten
- H1 updated to include primary keyword
- Inline keyword additions (2-5 instances) without rewriting paragraphs
- CTA added or improved if missing
- Internal links added (2-3)
What stays:
- All existing body content
- All existing headers
- All existing structure
- Publish date updated after changes
Deliverable: List of specific edits with exact replacement text. No bulk rewrite.
Level 2: Moderate (2-4 hours)
What changes:
- Everything in Light scope
- 2-3 weak sections expanded by 100-200 words each
- FAQ section added or expanded to 5-7 questions
- One new H2 section added to cover a topic gap
- Social proof updated (new testimonial or stats)
- Images updated or added with alt text
What stays:
- Core structure and argument flow
- Sections that are already performing
- Author or brand voice
Deliverable: Updated full page with tracked changes or side-by-side diff of changed sections.
Level 3: Major (4-8 hours)
What changes:
- Complete structural rebuild (new H2 architecture based on competitor analysis)
- Introduction fully rewritten
- All thin sections replaced with new content
- FAQ section rebuilt from PAA data
- New statistics throughout (sourced, current)
- E-E-A-T improvements: author credentials, first-person experience markers, citations
- Target word count increased to match top competitor + 15%
What stays:
- Same primary keyword target
- Same URL (do not change slug unless redirect is planned)
- Brand voice
Deliverable: Fully rewritten page content with new word count, new sections documented, before/after word count comparison.
Level 4: Overhaul (1-3 days)
Use when:
- Intent mismatch — the page is targeting the wrong query
- Keyword target changed entirely
- Page was penalized or manually reviewed
- Brand voice has changed
- Business model has changed
What changes: Everything. This is a new page that lives at the same URL.
Overhaul process:
- Archive the old content (save a copy before touching anything)
- Re-run the research: SERP analysis, PAA mining, competitor gap
- Write new outline from scratch
- Produce new content per seo-article-writer-modes Mode 2 (Research) or Mode 5 (Editorial)
- Set up 301 redirect if URL must change
- Resubmit sitemap after publication
Deliverable: Full article content, meta, FAQ, schema recommendations, redirect spec if applicable.
What Never Changes in a Rewrite
Regardless of scope:
- URL slug — never change without a 301 redirect plan
- Internal links pointing TO this page — update them only if the page moves
- Existing ranking keywords — do not remove content that's currently generating traffic. Expand, don't replace.
- Existing backlinks — if external sites link to this page's specific content, preserve that content or the link becomes dead.
